We focus on a "Lab to Table" approach to science by bringing primary research into the hands of the masses. Our research is based on invertebrate endocrinology, immunology, and sustainability education that can be used as inspiration to further the general population’s interest in science. It's never too early or too late to become a scientist!
How it all started...
In 2016, just a few weeks into my first semester of undergrad, I began working with former Ecophysiology lab members to talk about our research in Virginia's New River Valley. I have since revamped this initiative to take on the title of Radford's Roach Roadshow (RRR). Science Spooktacular (2016)This was my first science outreach event ever! My advisor/PI, Dr. Davis, asked if anyone was willing to help out with a display table and I eagerly raised my hand (having absolutely no idea what I was signing myself up for). When we arrived, Erin Dudley (the creator of the original Roachzilla display), asked me to move the cockroaches out of their carrying container and into the Sustainability Stack (pictured right). Of course, I had never held a Madagascar hissing cockroach before but it was time for me to figure things out! By the end of the day, I carried a roach in each hand as I taught children about our research and the importance of sustainability. Fast forward three years and now I have created my own outreach brand, RRR.
